Return to “Normal”

I recently returned home to Durango from 8 days in a “Big City” visiting family. What a relief!  I sat in stagnant traffic often and observed a lot of what I interpreted as anxiety and frustration among the masses. With no disrespect to our nation’s “Big Cities”, our quality of life and pace of living here in Southwest Colorado is, I feel, so much healthier. Since moving here over a year ago, I have come to find I get just as much done as I did before but enjoy the process more. That means taking more time stopping to taste the coffee, smell the roses and really, really take in the beauty that surrounds us. Here at Sorrel Sky Gallery it is such a treat to watch our guests move slowly thru the gallery. I believe the environment of an art gallery promotes a slower approach to enjoying the surroundings but I also believe that Durango itself sets the pace for the people who live here and those who visit.  After 8 days away and an exhausting flight I couldn’t help but feel so lucky to be back to Sorrel Sky Gallery and to call Durango home!

Sunshine, Durango and Art – What Could Be Better?

The sun is out, it’s a great day to be in Durango and I’m surrounded by
art.  Does it get any better than this?  The value of the sun and the location go without saying, but did you know that viewing art has health benefits?  One of our customers just made the comment that “coming to Sorrel Sky Gallery is like getting a massage”.  I knew exactly what he meant, but he went on to explain that it is a relaxing place to visit.  A gallery, versus a museum, is a place where one can invest in the fine art and jewelry on view.  But it also means that visitors are welcome to simply amble thru the gallery taking in all that the art on view offers in terms of reflection and beauty and interest.  We so enjoy sharing the stories of the paintings, pottery, sculpture and jewelry and of the artists whose extraordinary talents we represent.  Enjoy Durango for the natural beauty that surrounds us in the landscape and in the diverse offerings of our talented artists.

Finally a little bit of some cooler weather today in gorgeous Durango, Co. All I
can say as that this heat wave is making me jealous that I am working instead of
relaxing in the refreshing Animas River. I know it is still a little to early to be
inner tubbing, but I need to go rafting hopefully once this weekend. It is so
great to see all the different rafting companies doing such a great job making
sure their passengers have a one of a kind experience. Keep it going Mild to
Wild, Mountain Waters, Durango River Tripppers, Outlaw Tours and Durango
Rafting Company for all your hard work to making our Animas River adored by
everyone willing to take the trek down river! Especially since it is already Animas
River Days which is one of my favorite activities to do enjoy in the summer! I
mean who does not love going down to a spot where you can over look the river
and see all the smiling faces having such a great time. There is so much to be
entertained by from a river parade to face painting to an art show making sure
there is activities for all ages. Cannot wait to head down to the the Doubletree
hotel and sit outside the Animas River Cafe to watch as the festivities
begin!

Today was a day that I am beyond content to live in a Colorado, mountain town such as my Durango. I went for a bike ride along the Animas River Trail with my boyfriend from my house to enjoy the new, seasonal menu from East by Southwest for lunch. There was an array of new items to choose from that blew my taste palette….never had tried sushi with bacon and let me tell you it was quite the experience! We decided to exercise a little lunch off by walking around the historic downtown. To my surprise there was all kinds of new stuff going on. Cosmopolitan had now opened even more of their rooftop deck (made me think it would be fun to throw a little party up there) and Blu Boutique has moved shop on to Main Ave. I was able to peek inside the new space and I feel like its going to add some new glamour to downtown. With summer now in swing, I was dazed by how time had flown since the Iron Horse Bicycle Classic is almost here. My best friend has been training for the past four months to check this event off her bucket list. I cannot wait to cheer her on both at the starting line and with a Ska True Blonde in hand for her in Silverton. GO RACERS!!

Springtime in Durango

The quintessential Colorado vacation: Mesa Verde, cool mountain lakes, historic downtown Durango, the steam train, rafting the Animas River—so much to do and see on a mountain vacation. Just outside my back door are miles of Durango bike trails that I plan to explore with my family. While waiting for my new mountain bike to arrive I checked out Trails 2000 for local bike trails and maps in town and around the San Juan National Forest.  I could use a tour guide as I am usually found on horseback somewhere in La Plata County! Get out, enjoy the bright blue skies—if you see my kids out discovering the hiking trails please tell them to wear their bike helmets!

Food–e-mail

No one sends me emails with the joke of the day or angel wishes that I am required to forward to 10 friends and then something good will happen in 10 minutes. Moore’s A Gate at the Stairs

For some of us, there’s nothing quite like curling up with a really great read after a day of playing in the snow.  Long winter nights, or even chilly days by the fire, create just the right excuse for digging deep into a new book.  I recently read Lorrie Moore’s A Gate at the Stairs—listed in the New York Times as one of the 10 Best Books of 2009, * and loved, loved, loved it.  Moore, mostly known as a short-story writer, brings us twenty-year-old Tassie Keltjin, a college student on winter break in the Midwest, looking for work.  She finds it as a nanny for a quirky white couple who have adopted a black baby girl.  Beautifully written, A Gate at the Stairs tackles big issues—racism, family, love and war–with humor, grace and wisdom.  On my bedside table now?  The Girl Who Fell From the Sky by Heidi Durrow (due out February 16)**.  Flying through it, curled up under a warm blanket.   Stop by Maria’s Bookshop to ask me or any of my well-read colleagues for more recommendations of books we love!  We’re at 960 Main Avenue from 9:00 to 9:00 every day, or at www.mariasbookshop.com day or night, whatever the season.

Ski? Ski Hesperus!

I needed an easy intro to family skiing this year. I wanted to test my ski legs and get the kid-logistics set as we hit the slopes. With flakes falling, we headed to Ski Hesperus for a first day—what a blast!  A short drive from Durango—11 miles if you are counting. We parked, skied from our car and enjoyed 5 hours of simple fun in the snow. When our legs tired, we opted for inner tubing. The slopes will be lit come January—thank heavens not today as we all were tired. Hot cocoa and nachos for lunch and we could have packed our own picnic. Our plans for dinner at Kennebec Café were dashed as we opted for pizza at home. A bargain price worth every penny in smiles. Good night.

The mini-escape

Snow Town, USA—Durango, Colorado…sixteen inches of fresh powder fell over night. At Durango Mountain Resort that means fresh tracks. On my driveway, it means snow shoveling. School was cancelled so I translated that joyous message to my snow-frolicking kids:  grab a shovel! Tired of shoveling, I called my sister and we walked (snuck away) into town for a massage at Spaaah! Nothing could have felt better than a warm massage for my aching shoulders. Instead of heading home, we headed to the Red Snapper for lunch and a glass of wine. Temps are mid 30s so the walk home wasn’t cold. I turned down my driveway and was greeted by 2 quirky snowmen and a snowball fight with my kids. Maybe I shouldn’t have made them shovel while I was relaxing?

Historic Downtown Durango

I love being able to step outside and know that I am part of a piece of history. Walking down Main, you can actually feel the ghosts of the past clinging to the historic buildings and hotels. The Strater and the General Palmer hotel especially have a very old world feel to them. You can only imagine the ghosts and stories lurking in every room and every stairwell. The architecture in Durango remains untouched and rustic in the midst of sky scrapers and mini malls. I love walking into the local shops and knowing the owners and how much they love their shops and being a part of Durango. You know you’ve escaped when you enter the town.
